The future of Technology and Innovation in social care service provision

Examining how the use of technology in providing care can improve service delivery both now and in the future.

The delivery of adult social care is intrinsically a story of human interaction; but that’s not to say there isn’t a place for greater use of technology to aid service delivery.

While nothing can, or indeed should, replace the wonderful job that our staff do at Bartlett’s, Stone House and Merryfield; innovations in the care sector are delivering technologies that can supplement and help further improve the way we deliver services.

 

Digital Transformation in Care

For a start, we are embracing digital transformation with I.T. platforms that support integrated care. We are migrating to digital care plans, which will provide access to live information; ensuring that staff are kept up-to-date and can make informed decisions to deliver the highest quality of care. With records that are secure, accurate and compliant, evidencing care becomes more manageable, and care management more standardised.

Local Authorities can also benefit from digital care plans; being provided with continuous, easily accessible reporting delivers savings in contract monitoring. Digital platforms will allow Local Authorities to see in real-time the quality of care for each individual they are providing funding for. This will allow a smoother and faster contract monitoring process, providing a money-saving capacity and ability to provide safeguarding oversight.

Peverel Court Care believe the future lies in digital transformation and data intelligence to support better decision-making; allowing us to better predict, optimise and continue to improve care. Integrated care will be vital to both Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire County Councils, and our digital care platform will assist in managing care between providers. However, innovation never stops and new technologies and opportunities are constantly being brought to market for the care sector.

Peverel Court Care’s Stone House nursing home in Buckinghamshire receives overall 'Good' with Outstanding in 'Responsive' in latest CQC inspection

Stone House receives overall ‘Good’ with Outstanding in ‘Responsive’ in latest CQC inspection

Peverel Court Care’s Stone House has received it’s latest glowing inspection report from the CQC, which included an ‘Outstanding’ rating in assessing our ability to be Responsive.

We were also rated as ‘Good’ in the four other assessment categories, which evaluate whether the home is considered by the inspectors to be Safe, Effective, Caring and Well-led.

The overall CQC rating awarded for our Buckinghamshire nursing home was ‘Good’ based on the most recent inspection, which was carried out on 26th February 2019.

Some of the comments from the inspector’s report included:

“Care was exceptionally person-centred and focused on ensuring people with dementia lived as independent lives as possible. The care was designed to ensure people’s maximum independence was encouraged and maintained.”

“People experienced positive outcomes regarding their health and wellbeing. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible; the policies and systems in the service supported this.”

“Staff received good supervision and training, which provided them with the knowledge and skills to enable them to provide good care. There was a workplace culture that was open and honest. Staff told us they felt supported by the manager and they could speak with them at any time.”

While the report is indicative of a well-managed and caring environment for residents and staff alike, we’re not resting on our laurels. We will continue to strive for Stone House and the other Peverel Court Care homes in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire to be recognised as ‘Outstanding’ across the board in future reports. The CQC inspection report follows hot on the heels of our recent “Top Care Home Group” award win at the carehome.co.uk awards (you can read more here), which was based on positive reviews from our residents and their families, including the following from the daughter of one of our Stone House residents:

This care home is amazing. It is run by the manager and the most caring staff, many of whom have been with the company for years. The care they give their residents is second to none and the home provides them with lots of entertainment and you can see the residents enjoying these events. The meals they provide are all prepared fresh every day by the resident chef. The atmosphere when you visit the home is also something, welcoming and lots of laughter all around. A super home and I can thoroughly recommend it.

 

The future for Stone House nursing home, Aylesbury

 

As part of our journey towards ‘Outstanding’ at Stone House, we are implementing a number of upcoming initiatives, including:

  • The introduction of bespoke training and development pathways’ for Healthcare Assistants, Registered Nurses and all other departments of the Peverel Court Care team
  • Rewards and recognition of staff for various achievements and milestones, such as high levels of attendance, attaining NVQ qualifications, referring new staff members, years of service, and the receipt of special praise via relatives
  • New and improved technology infrastructure
  • Non-clinical customer service training for all staff

We believe that by recruiting, developing, rewarding and retaining the best possible staff to deliver care to our residents within the idyllic setting of Stone House, we can continue to improve on the incredible levels of service for which we’re already being recognised.

An Incredible CQC Rating For Merryfield House Nursing Home, Witney

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Merryfield House Nursing Home has been given a wonderful rating by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) after an unannounced inspection in October.

Unannounced inspections play a very important role in making sure the service provision that is seen is what is happening in the care home every day – not just on a day when everything has been prepared for an inspection. They are the best way to make sure that services are providing high-quality care to residents at all times.

We were visited in October 2017 by an inspector, who spoke to six residents of Merryfield and three family members. They also spoke to three relatives outside of the inspection time. They found our service to be ‘good’ across four inspection categories, finding us safe, effective, caring and well-led. We were rated ‘outstanding’ for our responsiveness.

In our report, we were praised by the inspector for showing a commitment to personalised care.

“The responsiveness of the service was outstanding. Care planning was fixed upon having the individual at the heart of their care. Relatives said support was extremely responsive because staff really understood the principles of outstanding personalised care. People were encouraged to pursue personal interests and hobbies and to access activities in the service and community. Changes in people’s needs were immediately recognised and appropriate; prompt action taken, including the involvement of external professionals where necessary. People were encouraged to raise any complaints or concerns and were given opportunities to do so.” 

At Peverel Court Care we are dedicated to providing personalised care and we are thrilled that this came across in our most recent inspection. When people come to live with us we invest a lot of time in pulling together personalised care plans to make sure that our residents have a high quality of life and are comfortable and happy.

The Importance Of Friendship At Peverel Court Care

After family, friends are usually the most important people in our lives. Modern family life can often mean our loved ones are geographically spread across the country. When we are older our children will likely have their own very busy lives to run. All of this may mean that they can’t see us as often as they would like and this is when our friendships become even more important. Friends are the family we choose for ourselves. They support us in times of need. Often just knowing that they are there for us is enough to make us feel better.

Think about some of the best times you have ever had in your life. Undoubtedly some of those times will have taken place in the presence of friends.

They’re there for us in the best and worst of times. That’s why we foster and value friendships between our residents and carers at Peverel Court Care. Here are some of the reasons we think friendships here are so incredibly important.

Friendship helps our staff do their jobs better…

The main purpose of any staff member here at Peverel Court Care is to provide high-quality care to the elderly people who live here. Friendships help our staff to do that.

“I do consider myself to be a friend to them because I feel it from my own heart.  I could not do the job that I do, which is quite solitary at times in the lounges, without having those genuine emotional feelings towards our residents.” – Peverel Court Care Carer

When you offer the kind of comprehensive care we offer, it helps greatly if you have a genuine relationship with the people you are caring for. If you feel as though the person you’re taking care of is your friend, you are much more likely to give the best care you can at all times.

Some of our residents here are uncomfortable in social situations…

Some of our residents just can’t bring themselves to join in with the group activities we offer here. Some of them just don’t want to. For these individuals, the carers visiting their rooms are the only people they see all day. Those interactions need to be friendly otherwise those people are going to feel incredibly isolated.

Some of our residents don’t have anyone else…

Our job is to make sure that those who live with us have a high quality of life. For residents without family or friends of their own left, it is important that they feel as though they have valuable and important relationships with our carers. We don’t just want them to feel cared for; we also want them to feel cared about. We can’t give our residents the high-quality care we are striving for unless people really do care about them as individuals.

It’s important for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients…

We can’t sum this up any better than one of our carers did when we asked her about genuine friendships at work.

“There have been many times when a resident has literally poured their heart out to me with real visual emotion in their expression or body language or chatted away to me ten to the dozen smiling and laughing. Sometimes I have not been able to understand what they are saying. It is so important to maintain an interest, give direct eye contact, verbalise laughter and support, handhold if appropriate and show a keen interest in what they are saying. That is friendship. That is caring. No matter how severe the level of dementia or Alzheimer’s may be, they will know if we are not responding to their needs at that time. As human beings, we would offer this support to our own friends. If we didn’t then they would not share their problems with us again. To give great care, we need to offer this level of support and friendship.”

It’s in our nature and good for our mental health….

The Mental Health Foundation says that friendship is vital for mental health.

“Friendship is a crucial element in protecting our mental health. We need to talk to our friends and we want to listen when our friends want to talk to us. Our friends can keep us grounded and can help us get things in perspective. It is worth putting effort into maintaining our friendships and making new friends. Friends form one of the foundations of our ability to cope with the problems that life throws at us.”

For the mental health of our residents, it is vitally important that we foster meaningful and fulfilling friendships with our residents.

We’re all about friendship

Being around strong, meaningful friendships makes Peverel Court Care a happy place to be. There is an atmosphere of genuine care here because our carers really do hold our residents’ dear and they want to make sure they are doing the best for them. Sometimes when we are faced with difficult situations or sadness, those friendships can make our jobs more difficult, but still, we wouldn’t have it any other way. Friendship in care is the way forward. As they say; “When it hurts to look back and you’re scared to look ahead, you can look beside you and your friends will be there.”

Technology Is Changing the World For All People Of All Ages

Quite often people in older generations complain about technology. Largely they are perturbed by the overuse of mobile phones and other communicative technologies. Part of a generation that didn’t have such luxuries, they’re concerned by the idea that people can be contacted at all times of the day and night wherever their location. So it’s ironic that this technology actually makes growing older and living away from your family much easier.

At Peverel Court Care we weave technology into our individual care plans. We’ve written before about how we give some of our residents mobile phones so that they can keep in touch with relatives, whilst for others who need additional support we arrange phone calls at a specific time so that our staff can help them connect to their family.

We’ve also written about our use of Immedicare, a system that gives us access to a digital health hub facility and experienced nurses and clinicians covering a range of specialties.

Today we wanted to tell you more about how we use Skype within our care homes to make communication with family members easier.

We’ve set up a dedicated guest network throughout all of our properties, with fibre WiFi available for all residents and their guests. This is useful for residents whose family live far away, or for those who have family or friends who are not particularly mobile themselves. Often it is most useful for those who have family living in other countries.

One of our residents Peter has one daughter who lives in Australia and another who still lives in the UK. Since we set up Skype for Peter, he speaks to his daughter using the system regularly from the other side of the world. Another of our residents, Joan, talks on Skype to her relatives regularly from Canada and Australia. Another resident speaks to her son who lives in Bournemouth on Skype when he can’t travel to visit her.

We’re always looking for new ways to enhance the technological solutions we offer at Peverel Court Care. Just recently we enquired about a piece of technology called Active Protect, which helps protect the hips of elderly individuals. We discovered this whilst researching the global technology conference CES17, looking for the latest technologies to benefit our residents. Next week we’ll be visiting the Design Museum for the New Old exhibition, which explores how designers can make life easier for the elderly.

It is our main purpose to make the lives of our residents happy, easy and comfortable. Technology is a huge part of achieving that objective. We are constantly researching new technologies. Rest assured, we’ll be at the forefront of any new developments, making sure our residents can utilise them in the best way possible.

Our Vision For Bartlett’s Residential Care Home

In previous articles, we’ve talked about innovation and vision when it comes to Peverel Court Care. We believe that we are at the forefront of providing high quality care and we want it to stay that way. This means we must have a pioneering and evolving vision; one that changes based on sector research and adapting best practice.

In this article, we’d like to share with you our vision for Bartlett’s Residential Care Home, as shared by Director of Peverel Court Care Anil Dhanani.

Recruiting Staff That Drive Change

We make it our duty to recruit the highest quality care staff; those with experience and genuine passion. Once we recruit them, we then work on retaining them. We do this by providing them a happy working environment, one in which they can grow, learn and make a real impact. We’re proud to say that we are surrounded by staff who constantly want to see Bartlett’s be the best we can be. They’re forever coming up with ideas to better the service we offer. Our vision for Bartlett’s involves keeping and recruiting more of these incredible staff members.

Seeking Out The Best Care Practices

Over the last twenty years care practices have changed. They will change again in the next twenty. This means we need to make sure that we’re informed and learned in the most productive care practices. Very soon our Directors will be flying to Holland to look at some brilliant new facilities and practices currently being employed elsewhere in Europe. We always want to make sure we are at the forefront of excellent care.

Anil said, “Good care practice is not and never should be seen with a static mindset. We continually understand more as a society about how, for example, dementia manifests itself and how best to improve someone’s quality of life. You can be sure Bartlett’s will be at the forefront employing techniques and practices that might best do just this. This could be introducing virtual dementia suits to allow staff to get first hand insight and experience of how dementia might manifest itself physically, improving staff empathy and understanding, or analysing the changing tastes of generations as time passes. I can, for example, tell you that there has been a marked difference in menu requests and the tastes of the wartime generation and the now post war generation. There are indeed an almost infinite number of ways to improve someone’s wellbeing, from nutritional considerations through to tailored social interaction. When you consider the differing characters and needs of each individual and how the ageing demographic is changing, the possibilities of how to improve their wellbeing is in some ways endless.”

We Listen To Our Residents

Our monthly residents survey allows us to find out directly from our residents what they would like to see us do more, or indeed less. They’re extremely insightful and effective. At the start of every year we’ll use all the information we’ve garnered internally and externally to decide on the big changes we want to make. This means, to a degree, that the vision of Bartlett’s is largely down to how our residents feel, which is exactly how it should be.

Anil said, “There might be changes to facilities, hospitality and training and we have a team to ensure it gets implemented. However, having said that, not a day goes by where we aren’t thinking of or implementing ways to better ourselves and the lives of our residents.”

Expanding In All The Right Ways

We’re expanding Bartlett’s this year. We’ll be accepting twelve new residents into newly designed suites, so that we can give great care to even more people. We’re expanding in other ways too, originally we had planned to build another two bedrooms but we changed these plans in order to give our residents more communal space. This year they’ll be given a cinema room, library, private dining facility, assisted bathing facility and reception room to enjoy, as well as fully landscaped gardens.

Personalised Service

Our vision for Bartlett’s doesn’t extend much further when it comes to accepting more residents. We don’t plan on growing much more. In order to retain a personalised service, one in which our residents and staff all know one another well and our residence feels like a home, we don’t think we can add many more rooms. We would much rather work on providing a perfect service to fewer people than struggle to provide a mediocre one to a bigger group.

Anil said, “Personalised service is what we pride ourselves on. The term ‘Personalised’ is certainly used quite a bit, but I think it would be disingenuous of anyone to say they could really offer that in a Home with 50+ residents. That familiarity and firsthand knowledge of your client, which is essential, just isn’t there in such places.”

Care That Works For Everyone

Anil said, “If I had to explain Bartlett’s to someone in thirty seconds, I would tell them that their loved one will be very safe and incredibly well looked after, by a team of some of the most conscientious, caring, well trained and capable people you will find. I’d say our families have peace of mind and our residents have the best chance to rediscover their verve and sense of purpose, fulfillment and comfort, in surroundings that are beautiful both inside and out.”

Everything that we do is around our vision of providing the best care to our residents, so that they feel happy and secure and their families feel content in the knowledge that those they love are being well looked after. As long as we keep this at the centre of our vision, we’re confident that we’ll continue to offer some of the best care in the UK.

Peverel Court Care is like a large family

We’re committed to providing high quality, person-centered care to everyone who lives with us, and that commitment cascades through our staff. This week, we’d like to introduce you to a lady who has been committed to Peverel Court Care for almost twenty years.

Jill Timms is our Quality Assurance Manager and has worked in some form of care role since she qualified as a nurse. Jill chose her career in care because she had watched her parents looking after the health needs of others when she was a little girl and been involved in caring for people from a very early age.

“My father was a doctor and my mother was a nurse,” Jill explains, “As we grew up, my five siblings and I were surrounded by care. I remember being very influenced by all of this as a child, looking at pictures in my father’s medical books and being around as my mother cared for everyone in our village, either on the phone or in many practical ways.”

Jill was born near Manchester, but moved to Cornwall when she was four. She later completed her nursing training at the world famous Radcliffe Infirmary and Churchill Hospice in Oxford. After moving through positions of seniority for several years her family moved to Witney, where she began working for Peverel Court Care in 1998.

Jill says that when she was young she was the well little girl amongst three poorly sisters, so she grew up caring for people at a very early age. She adds it was only natural that she became a nurse and that she has found her career to be rewarding.

When asked what she might like to say to people who are looking for a career in Care “I can only speak for the Peverel Court Care homes where we try to really value, appreciate, train, motivate and inspire our staff. Staff are our greatest asset. A lot of our employees across all three homes have worked for the company for many years. Because we value our staff, we do not have a high staff turnover.”

Jill declares she enjoys working for Peverel Court Care because high quality is at the heart of everything we do.

“Not many small groups of care homes have someone in my role, who specialises in the full Inspection Process (for CQC and Local Authority). So I feel valued. I like the fact that I’m free to be creative and therefore have been able to develop specific / bespoke Quality Monitoring systems and processes, which are used in our homes. It’s also very rewarding working with our amazing staff teams to reach exceptional quality standards. Our two nursing homes were recently rated borderline outstanding by the CQC. That’s our aim now, to reach Outstanding.”

When asked what she might like to say to people who are looking for care and support, Jill advises potential residents and their families to consider Peverel Court Care, citing our dedication to provide a personalised, caring home for all residents, along with family support.

“You only need to come and visit our homes to see what lovely, friendly places they are. Our twice-yearly relative and resident’s surveys are very complimentary. Our managers will come and meet you in your home or hospital and discuss your care needs with you. We’ll then help you to settle in, enabling you to make the transition as smooth and as positive as possible. We understand this is a big decision and will support you and your family all the way. Each of our three homes has their own special staff team. Peverel Court Care is like a family.”

Technology and innovation at Peverel Court Care

In a previous article we talked about the importance of technology with regards to keeping our residents happy.

At Peverel Court Care, we investigate the technological needs and expectations of all of our residents and then meet those expectations wherever we can, making sure residents who want a mobile phone have one, or those who need help making phone calls get the assistance they need.

We are delighted to work with Synergy Mobile, a leading provider of telecoms and IT services, who advise us on the best business systems to us and give us straight forward, helpful advice and support when we need it. They help us to make sure that our resident and business communications are effective and easy to complete.

But technology isn’t only important in for communication with family members and loved ones, it’s also incredibly important for the safety of our residents in a medical situation. That’s why we’re now utilising the services of a pioneering telemedicine service called ‘immedicare’.

Because of the nature of our work, it’s to be expected that we’re going to need to utilise the expertise of health professionals on a reasonably regular basis. Some our residents have long term health conditions that produce symptoms that may need monitoring by health professionals. In some cases, our residents may suddenly feel unwell, or have symptoms that will not go away.

Previously we would have had no choice but to call out a doctor, or to uproot these residents and take them to a hospital. For Alzheimer’s and dementia patients especially, this upheaval can be distressing and uncomfortable. They have usually come to know one of our sites as their home. Taking them away from the surroundings they are used to can be upsetting.

Immedicare allows us to access a dedicated digital health hub facility, giving us access to experienced nurses and clinicians covering a range of specialties. That means that we can avoid having to take our residents to hospital if there is no need for them to be admitted, saving them the stress of an unnecessary admission.

We also get to utilise the advice and support of those professionals to help us to improve and increase the quality of our own day-to-day car, especially if we have a patient with a particular discomfort or condition. Immedicare is a lifeline, a new form of communication with an army of medical professionals there to make the lives of our residents more comfortable.

Communication is the key. It’s important to our residents in a number of ways that they know about, such as easily being able to keep in touch with their families, but it’s important to them in a number of ways that they don’t know about, too Synergy Mobile allows them to do the former easily and effectively, and immedicare is there to keep them healthy and happy behind the scenes. Together, they’re a united team of innovative and pioneering technology.

Our residents and the animals they love

We are a nation of pet lovers. Our favourites are undoubtedly the dog and the cat. Many of us choose to share our homes and lives with these incredible creatures, who we often come to think of as part of our own family. They give us hours of joy, affection and love.

When people are considering moving into a care home, one of the most distressing aspects of this life changing decision can be giving up the lovely animals that have become their friends. Even for those who don’t own pets, the prospect of not having access to animals can be upsetting.

At Peverel Court Care, we know that animals can have a massive impact on the mood of an individual. It’s been accepted for a long time that the opportunity to spend time with friends of the furry variety is extremely important to those who love them. To make sure our residents have the chance to enjoy animals, we utilise the services of therapy dogs.

Therapy dogs are trained to offer comfort and support to people. They’re some of the country’s hardest working animals, visiting care homes and hospitals to greet elderly people, disabled children or victims of disaster. Their job is to brighten the lives of those they meet.

In June we were visited by Bertie Bastan, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a lovely temperament. Our residents were overjoyed to spend time with him, and he was friendly, gentle and well behaved.

We loved him so much that we’ve formally invited him to our Summer Drinks Party on Wednesday 13th July at Merryfield House, where we will all be delighted to see him again.

If you have a pet that you just can’t part with, there are occasions when we can accept pets alongside their owner – as long as a series of circumstances are met. Moving into a care facility doesn’t have to mean the end of your life with animals. We constantly strive to make sure that the things you loved before are still available to you when you’ve decided it’s time to move on, even if those things have four legs, fur and a tail.

We spend our whole lives developing as individuals. It takes years for us to learn who we truly are, what we like and what we don’t like.
When we’re older and we’re relying on care and support, most of us will express a wish to keep our individuality.

Just meeting the immediate needs of our residents is not enough. Every person we give support to has an individual care plan, which we use to tailor our care to their specific needs.

The plan gives us general information about medication and physical mobility issues, whilst also gathering extra details that allow us to add personalised touches to the care they receive.

We want to know a range of additional information, like what people like to eat and drink, how many hours they like to sleep and if they like to take a nap in the afternoons. We also ask to hear about any social or emotional needs they may have, so that we can give them everything they need to feel safe, secure and comfortable.

Knowing this information about our residents means that we’re able to offer a truly personalised care package.

Personal attentiveness
As part of our care plans, we deliver a personal attentiveness that we’re very proud of. We might learn from a care plan that a resident prefers their hair brushing in a certain way, but that they struggle with mobility. When this is the case, our staff will go out of their way to make sure that residents are happy.

Beverley, who has worked at Peverel Court Care as Senior Care Lead for 9 years, says that this personal attentiveness has a tremendous effect.

“Seeing residents smile when I say hello, or even at the gentle touch of a hand, makes every day worthwhile. They trust, they laugh, they smile, they cry, they are individuals and we are there to protect and care for them. What better job is there?”

She says it is this approach to care that makes residents content and happy.

“A smile costs nothing. Residents have confidence in themselves and sometimes even begin to do things independently.”

The personalisation of the service we provide is one of our main priorities at Peverel Court Care. No one person is the same. Providing excellent processes and procedures is not enough, the way we look after everyone who lives with us must be tailored to the personal needs of the individual. That way, we can give our residents the sense of importance and belonging they deserve. This high quality, person-centred care is at the heart of what we do.
